Biography

Born in 1996, Julia Vilar is a Brazilian-Portuguese operatic soprano, composer, artist and aspiring writer who, from an early age, had shown great interest and talent for the arts. She says: "Music has always made itself a strong and vital presence in my life, in my very core, long before I ever imagined it would also become my profession."

Although her artistic journey had already taken place since early memories, her actual musical studies started not before she was 15 years old, when she studied classical piano for 2 years with the teacher and pianist Siumara Magnani at the school of music Musikalina, in São Paulo, Brazil. Soon afterwards, she entered the FIAM-FAAM University of Music and Arts, where she stood out and, in 2017, she successfully graduated in musical composition, earning the Academic Honour Award for being the student with the Best Performance.
From 2015 to 2018, she studied classical singing with the soprano Edna D'Oliveira at the EMMSP (the Municipal Conservatoire of Music of São Paulo), where she started developing her vocal technique and performance skills with many renowned Brazilian musicians, and sang as a 2nd soprano in the Conservatoire choir performing a wide, diverse range of classical repertoire. During that time, she also performed as a soloist in several concerts and recitals representing parts of operatic roles such as Desdemona from Verdi’s Otello, Liù from Puccini’s Turandot, and Elettra from Mozart’s Idomeneo, as well as chamber and sacred music. She attended masterclasses and workshops with renowned professionals, like Solfeggio Practice, the "Voice and Body – Laboratory of Performance on Stage", Yoga of the Voice for lyrical singers, Alexander technique, among others.
In 2016, she sang as 2nd soprano with the Academic Madrigal of the FIAM-FAAM (a chamber vocal ensemble project idealized by the mezzo-soprano Teresa Longatto, a professor at this University), singing a vast repertoire of choir music. She took part, as singer, in the charity Christmas concerts of the church Nossa Senhora da Conceição, in São Paulo, in the years of 2016 and 2017.

From 2021 to 2022, she sang frequently as a guest soloist with the OFISA (Santo Amaro Philharmonic Orchestra) in several of their projects and concerts, including one called OFISA Women with which she premiered, singing as well, her own original song "Masaccio" (composed while she still was a composition student, and with text in Portuguese written by herself).
In August of 2024, she took part in the opera masterclass Cévennes Lyriques, in Montpellier, France, with renowned professionals: the French soprano Norah Amsellem, the North American baritone Kevin Short, the pianist Brigitte Clair, and the conductor Julien Benichou.

The voice teachers with whom she studied or learned from are: Edna D’Oliveira, Laura de Souza, Paulo Menegon, and Norah Amsellem (her current teacher).

Currently, Julia works as a freelance classical singer, composer, arranger, music and piano teacher, whilst furthering her singing capabilities with the French soprano Norah Amsellem.
Furthermore, she is a polyglot, speaking fluently Portuguese (her native language) and English, plus intermediate French and Spanish.

Multidisciplinary and passionate artist, Julia Vilar believes art to be more than a profession. In her own words, "it is the gateway through which the essence of my entire being manifests into the physical world."
